Why Your PC Is Slow, and How to Speed It Up

To understand why your PC does not perform as well as the day you bought it, try visualizing your computer as a closet. No matter how big the space is, it gets filled up much quicker than you expect. When your PC fills up, it becomes slower because it takes a longer to find, access, and process the information stored on it. Also, because a filled up PC will have no space to enable you to work, it can become painfully slow. Additionally, computer errors, such as stop errors, may become a common affair. You can prevent this from happening and get rid of my computer is slow complaints, if you perform the following PC cleaning tasks on a regular basis.

Task 1: Throw Away the Trash

The easiest thing you can do to speed up your PC is to empty your Recycle Bin on a regular basis. This bin, which is temporary storage for deleted files, can occupy a substantial space in your system. This is the reason why it will do a lot of good if you develop a habit of regularly throwing away the trash by emptying your Recycle Bin.

To empty the recycle bin, right click on the Recycle Bin icon on the Desktop and select the Empty Recycle Bin option.

Task 2: Clean up Your Disk

Cleaning up the hard disk of your computer is a fairly easy task which can be achieved by using the Disk Cleanup tool. Microsoft provides this efficient tool with every Windows operating system, and it helps clear out unwanted data like temporary Internet files, obsolete program files and so on. A clean hard disk ensures a faster performing computer.

To use Disk Cleanup, select the Start button, then Programs, followed by Accessories, then System tools and finally Disk Cleanup.

Task 3: Get Rid of Old Programs

Over a period of time, your computer may accumulate programs that were once functional, but are not in use anymore. Getting rid of these unwanted programs will help clean your computer and optimize its performance. Old programs can be removed manually by using the Add/Remove Program option in the Control Panel or by accessing More Options in the Disk Cleanup screen of Windows 98/ Me/XP. You can also opt to purchase a third-party program uninstaller that will also do the job efficiently. While removing old programs, it is recommended that you remove one program, then check that everything in your system is working correctly and then remove the next one.

Task 4: Scan Your Registry and Repair the Errors

Your Windows registry is a database of configuration information of your hardware, applications, programs and most importantly your operating system. As your computer continuously adds and removes programs, a lot of information gets edited, added or removed from the registry. Often, redundant information gets left over in the registry and this unwanted information interferes with the optimal performance of the PC. This is the reason why, to speed up your computer you need to regularly scan your registry and repair the errors with a reliable third party registry cleanup tool.

Task 5: Check your PC for Sufficient Memory

If the performance of your PC does not improve even after performing the four tasks enlisted above, your computer may be slow due to inadequate RAM (Random Access Memory). This RAM may have been sufficient when you purchased your PC but may be incapable of managing the current applications you use. In this scenario, you should consider upgrading the RAM of your system to improve your PC performance.
