If you do an internet search for free anti-spyware tools, you will come across dozens of programs that claim to be the best anti-spyware protection available. The download is free, they are free to use… it seems too good to be true. Usually, it is.
Antivirus and anti-spyware software have access to the deepest parts of your computer, so that they are better able to protect against threats. They are able to access very important system files and folders, as well as the registry—the brain of your computer. Many spyware programs will disguise themselves as these helpful tools. These types of infections are the most dangerous. With this almost unlimited access to your operating system, these malware programs are able to wreak havoc on your computer. These are also the most difficult infections to get rid of, as they root themselves deep into the registry and hard drive. In most cases, a complete re-installation of Windows is the only way to rid your computer of these nasty viruses.
Even if the anti-spyware tool is legitimate, most of the free programs are not very effective. They may scan your files and present you with a list of problems, even remove those problems. However, with most free softwares, virus definitions are not kept up-to-date. The result is that the anti-spyware tool will not catch many infections, and therefore not rid your PC of all of the problems present. Usually, these tools are ad-supported. They advertise either through pop-ups or browser redirection, because they are paid each time a person visits their website or clicks one of the ads.
Another potentially dangerous problem with free anti-spyware programs is the risk of deleting important files, or ending vital system processes. This can lead to crashes, random reboots, and—in worst case scenarios—a complete reformat of your hard drive.
The majority of free anti-spyware tools have no technical support. If you run into a problem while downloading, installing, or running the program, you are on your own. The creators of the software cannot afford to pay IT professionals to help users with their software. This can be particularly frustrating for beginners.
Creating an anti-spyware program, or any PC tool, is a complicated process, requiring a lot of time and effort. Think about it… would you do that for free? It’s a much safer bet to purchase a good, reputable antivirus or anti-spyware program. It’s a sound investment—it will keep your computer free of malware, and help it to run at its maximum efficiency.
