What is Sndvol32.exe Application Error

Computers get a lot of use every day; however there are lots of problems which can make them much less useful. Anyone experiencing computer errors will often find themselves unable to trust their computer.

One very common compute error is known as the sndvol32.exe application error. This can affect any computer running Microsoft Windows. It is most popular on Windows XP although it can also occur in other versions too.

What is the Sndvol32.exe File?

Sndvol32.exe is the file which is responsible for managing the volume of your windows computer. This is an integral part of the windows operating system, without it your soundcard will fail to work properly.

This file can be accessed in the control panel by clicking on Sound and Audio devices and then selecting the advanced options. The volume tab is the sounds and audio device settings.

It’s also possible to access sndvol32.exe from the command prompt. Open a command prompt by clicking Start, Run and typing in cmd. You can then enter sndvol32.exe. There are also additional switches which can be used including –R which will set it into recording mode.

SndVol32.exe should be found in the c:\windows\system32 directory. If it is located anywhere else on your computer then it’s likely to be a malicious application which must be removed.

Fixing the Sndvol32.exe Application Error

  1. Scanning for Viruses
    First start by scanning your computer for viruses. Sometimes a virus may pretend to be the Sndvol32.exe file. Removing these viruses should help to resolve the error. You will normally be able to tell if it’s a virus by looking at where the file is located; if it’s anywhere other than the system32 directory then it will be a virus.
  2. Adding the System Tray Icon
    Another simple way to fix the error is to add the volume icon to your system tray. This will occasionally work. To do this click start, run. Then type in mmsys.cpl and click ok.

    Click on the volume tab and check the box which says “place volume icon on the taskbar” Apply the changes and the volume should be visible next to the clock.

  3. Replacing Files
    Sometimes the problem will be because of corrupt Sndvol32.exe files. In this case you will need to replace the files. Pop the windows install CD into your CD ROM drive and then do the following:

    1. Click Start, Run, Type Cmd and click ok
    2. Type d: (or whatever the letter of your CD drive is)
    3. Type “cd i386” press enter
    4. Type “expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe. This will copy the missing file and expand it to the correct location.
