The trojan takes it’s name from the famous Trojan Horse of Troy. The citizens of Troy were tricked into allowing the large wooden horse into the city, believing it to be safe. However, it was filled with soldiers, who waited until the city slept, then came out and slaughtered the townspeople. A trojan horse on your computer acts in much the same way. In itself it is harmless, but it allows your computer to be invaded by viruses. It acts as a “back door” for malware. Trojans compromise the integrity of your computer’s security, and you will quickly start to notice that they will wreak havoc on your PC.
Because the trojan itself is not the issue, but rather the viruses it allows onto your computer, it can manifest itself in a wide variety of ways. It may be a subtle change that you’re not aware of until your computer is severely infected, or it could be a drastic change in the performance of your computer. Trojans can do one or more of the following:
Trojans can be prevented with good antivirus programs, regular maintenance, and careful browsing habits. If you find a trojan horse on your computer, removal can be difficult. It will depend on the severity of the viruses. Spyware, and malware that the trojan has allowed to be downloaded onto your PC. You’ll need to be sure that you have a good antivirus program, and that your database is updated with the most current virus definitions available. First, run some basic maintenance. Clean your computer by deleting your temporary internet files, cookies, and temporary windows files. Check your Add/Remove Programs list for any software or programs that you do not recognize, and remove them.
Run scans on your computer to detect and remove any malware. If you are still experiencing problems after taking these steps and running your antivirus program, you may have to manually delete the infected files. Finding them can be difficult, however, and unless you are knowledgeable about computers you can cause more harm than good. It is a good idea to have a very knowledgeable person to complete this step for you if you are not comfortable. In a worst case scenario, you would have to completely reformat your computer using your Windows boot discs. This would erase all data that you have stored on your PC. This step should not be taken unless all other remedies have been attempted.
