What Are CRC Error Messages And How To Fix Them

Computers are not immune to problems and there are actually a large number of potential problems which can wreak havoc with your working life. Computers are essential for almost every part of our life but they simply aren’t reliable.

What is a CRC Error?

CRC is a common type of computer error which is also known as Cyclic Redundancy Check. This is a process which is used to identify any errors which might affect your computer when data is being transmitted. Data is typically transmitted in tiny blocks and the CRC value needs to be verified to make sure that it matches the source.

If the two values do not match then this results in a CRC error. CRC error codes can ensure that the files you download from the internet are complete and are not corrupt or damaged.

Causes of CRC Errors

There are a number of different causes which can result in CRC errors. This can be very annoying when you have spent ages downloading files from the internet only to discover a CRC error.

The common causes of CRC errors are due to corrupt files, problems with your computer preventing the file from opening, problems occurring when the file was sent, the file becoming damaged during the transmission process.

Fixing CRC Errors

There are several different methods of fixing CRC errors depending on the exact cause of the problem. CRC errors are typically caused by transmission problems which means you need to find a way of fixing the problem rather than trying to repair the file itself.

Transmission problems

Many people experience problems with their network and modem which results in corrupt files. The problems with network and modems can result in data collisions or problems with your data connection. Heavy traffic can cause damage to data which results in problems.

You might also experience these errors if you are sending files which cannot be sent using the protocol you are currently using. Non-text files must be transmitted over FTP in binary mode, however text files must be sent in text mode otherwise people will experience CRC errors.

Ensure that your network and modem connection is reliable to ensure that you’re getting a complete file. If you have problems then you can first try sending the file again, if it fails time and time again then simply use a different protocol to see whether that makes any difference.

CRC Errors with Removable Media

You may also experience CRC errors if you are using removable media including USB drives, Zip disks and floppy disks. Assuming the source file is fine then this means that there is something wrong with the disk. Replace the risk and try again.

CRC Errors with CD’s

CD’s are seen as indestructible media, however this isn’t actually true. CD’s can get dirty or scratched which can result in CRC problems. If you experience any of these errors then you can try cleaning the disk, if this fails then you will need to get another copy of the disk.
