The email sender says it can eradicate the virus if you download their free software package. It looks really legitimate and you may be tempted to download the software just to get rid of the virus. You download the software and then have inadvertently let in the Trojan horse that lets in new viruses to your computer. It can be a massive headache.
When you have allowed a Trojan horse in, a number of things can happen. Some are just annoying and others are a bit malicious. It can change your desktop settings or it can put in unnecessary and stupid icons onto your desktop. The most serious of the Trojan horses can erase data or overwrite it on your computer. It can corrupt important files and spread viruses throughout your system. It can spy on you and report data to others about you. It can steal passwords and credit card numbers, phish around for bank account details and steal your money. It can create a backdoor so that your computer is never safe from intruders.
