Trojan Horse…A Destructive Computer Element

What exactly is a Trojan horse?

We all know something about them but many of us don’t know what they are. Trojan horses are destructive computer programs that look just like a harmless computer program. They do not replicate themselves like the viruses do but they allow viruses to get into your computer, a lot like the real Trojan horse from Troy. The can really be destructive in their own right. They promise to rid your computer from viruses but instead bring viruses back into your computer and they wreak havoc on your system.

Trojan horses can be mysterious and tricky.

They pop up and claim to help you get rid of a bad virus you have or send out an email that tells you that you may be exposed to a new virus and it can get rid of it. The email sender says it can eradicate the virus if you download their free software package. It looks really legitimate and you may be tempted to download the software just to get rid of the virus. You download the software and then have inadvertently let in the Trojan horse that lets in new viruses to your computer. It can be a massive headache.

When you have allowed a Trojan horse in, a number of things can happen. Some are just annoying and others are a bit malicious. It can change your desktop settings or it can put in unnecessary and stupid icons onto your desktop. The most serious of the Trojan horses can erase data or overwrite it on your computer. It can corrupt important files and spread viruses throughout your system. It can spy on you and report data to others about you. It can steal passwords and credit card numbers, phish around for bank account details and steal your money. It can create a backdoor so that your computer is never safe from intruders.

To get rid of Trojan horses and prevent yourself from getting one, you need to think of the following things:

  1. Keep a eye out: Trojan horses can infect you through bad websites, instant messaging, and emails that have attachments. Be hundred percent sure of the sender before you accept their attachment.
  2. Make sure that you have a current OS. This is especially true if yours is a Microsoft Windows OS.
  3. tInstall antivirus software that is up to date and reliable. Download updates as they come up so that you can catch any new Trojans that may infect the system. It also means you’ll be freer of worms and viruses. Make sure your antivirus software can scan your email and any files you down load through the web.
  4. Put in a firewall. This keeps unauthorized intruders from getting into your system and accessing your stuff. It will not get rid of all viruses but when used with good antivirus software and a current OS (operating system), you can have additional security and your computer will be relatively easily protected.

There is no guaranteed way to protect your computer a hundred percent of the time. You can make your computer more secure, however, by using the above methods.
