Fixing the Vista Slow Shutdown and Startup Problem

The slow startup and shutdown problem can be caused by a variety of problems. Depending on the cause different techniques of fixing the problem will be required. Try all of these solutions to work out the problem.

  1. Viruses
Viruses and spyware can make your computer much slower. This is because the computer will be busy running the viruses when it should be using the resources to speed up your computer. If you don’t already have a virus scanner on your computer then you should install one straight away. Update the virus scanner and run a thorough scan of your system.
  2. Spyware
Spyware is similar to computer viruses however it cannot normally be removed using virus scanners. Use a spyware scanner to search your computers hard drive for this malware and help to remove it. You might need to run a spyware scan several times and also run it in safe mode to eradicate all traces of the spyware.
  3. Startup Programs
Every time Vista boots up your computer will load various applications and services. Not all of these are strictly necessary. Although the startup folder on the start menu may be empty things are still being loaded in the background. To find out exactly what’s running at startup click Start, Run and enter “msconfig” then hit enter or click the OK button. This brings up a hidden settings window which can be used to adjust what is loaded at the time your computer boots up. Try adjusting these settings but be careful when it comes to services because this could prevent certain parts of your computer from working properly.
  4. Registry
Another very common cause of these problems is due to registry errors. The registry is a large database which stores lots of settings for your computer. If this becomes bloated or corrupt then it can slow down your entire computer. Use a registry scanner to clean it up and make your PC faster.
  5. Last Resort
The last resort would be to format your computer and reinstall Windows Vista again. Over time windows collects lots of unnecessary information which will cause it to run much slower than it does normally. Just make sure you have access to the product ID key and all of your drivers before starting

Windows Vista slow startup and shutdown problems are annoying however putting them right doesn’t have to be very difficult as long as you think systematically.
