The registry is the single most important aspect of your computer. It contains keys that instruct your computer on every aspect of operation, and is the foundation of your entire Windows operating system. If you’re considering using a registry cleaning software, be very careful.
If any important keys are deleted while cleaning the registry, you can irreparably damage your computer, so creating a registry backup before making any changes is wise. Most registry cleaning tools will contain a built-in registry backup tool. If not, you can create a System Restore point through the system properties on your computer’s Control Panel. Even if your registry cleaner does contain a built-in backup tool, creating a System Restore point is an added line of defense. This way, if any errors occur during the cleaning, you have a way to restore your hard drive to the state it was in before making any changes.
When searching for registry cleaning software, you will find many programs that claim to be free to use. Be wary. Unfortunately, some scammers and hackers prey on those having computer issues and use the opportunity to install viruses or spyware via false free registry cleaners or antivirus programs. Even some paid registry cleaners will come with additional unwanted software attached that can be malicious.
Less dangerous, but equally annoying, are the registry cleaning programs that claim to be free, but in reality only scan the registry, tell you what problems need to be fixed, and then require payment to do the actual cleaning. These registry scanners will waste a lot of your time, and often come packed with advertisements for the paid version that are difficult, if not impossible, to remove from your PC without taking doing a complete system reformat. If you have to reformat your computer, you will lose all personal files and folders, leaving only those files, folders, and software that are necessary for computer function.
Most paid registry cleaners are safe, but even when using these, precautions should be taken. Even the most proven software is prone to making mistakes. I cannot stress enough the importance of backing up your registry and/or creating a System Restore point before making any changes. The registry contains many keys that are absolutely vital for the operation of your computer, and if any of these keys are removed or altered incorrectly, it can cause one or more aspects of your operating system to become very unstable, or cease to function completely.
