Ikernel.exe Application Error

What is IKernel.exe?

Ikernel.exe is a file which is used by installshield when installing various applications. You might experience this error whenever you are installing an application which has an installer built using installshield.

In order to fix this problem you will need to try and get to the bottom of the cause and then work out how to fix it.

Fixing the iKernel.exe Application Error

The iKernel.exe error can be caused by a number of different things. In order to fix the problem you will first need to identify the cause so that you can correct it. Follow the steps below so that you can work out what the problem is caused by and also find a way of correcting it.

  1. Viruses
    A common cause of this error is due to computer viruses. Some viruses may pretend to be the iKernel.exe file so that they can infect your computer without any attention. If you don’t already have a virus scanner on your computer then you should download one from the internet. These don’t have to cost you anything as there are some pretty good free virus scanners out there if you know where to look.

    Once the virus scanner has been installed run a complete scan of your computer to detect any viruses. This might need to be repeated several times.

  2. Spyware
    Spyware is another type of malicious software which could cause the ikernel.exe errors. Spyware and adware can also pretend to be the file in question. Most virus scanners cannot remove spyware and even those that can, may not be able to remove it all.

    Download a dedicated spyware scanner to scan through your computer looking for potential spyware and remove it from your computer. All spyware must be removed and this might take a long time to complete. If you are having trouble then boot your computer into safe mode by pressing F8 at boot time and selecting safe mode.

  3. System Files
    The problem can also be caused because of missing or corrupt system files on your computer. This could be because the Stdole32.tlb, Stdole2.tlb or Stdole.tlb files are missing from your computer.

    To get these back put the windows install CD into your computers C Drive and then click Start, Run and type CMD. At the command prompt type cd\ and press enter.

    With the windows CD in the drive type Expand X:\i386\Stdole.tl_ C:\windows\system32\Stdole.tlb and then press enter. Replace X: with your cd drive letter, and C: with your windows hard drive letter. Also change the file names to replace the other missing files.
