How To Get Rid Of Popup Messages

Sometimes when you’re browsing the internet, a new window will open of its own accord, advertising a product or service. This is called a popup window, and they can be incredibly annoying and distracting when you’re trying to surf the web. So what causes a popup window?

Malware

Malware–viruses, spyware, and adware–can track your browsing habits and items that you enter into search engines, and use this information to send targeted ads in the form of popup windows that open each time you open your web browser or go to a different website. Even if your information is not being tracked, some adware will send random popup windows. Unfortunately, these are usually related to pornography. Getting rid of popups from this source is simply a matter of obtaining a good antivirus program, updating your virus definitions, and running a complete scan to remove the malware. Preventing these sorts of popups is easy, as well: keep your antivirus program up to date and be careful which programs and files you download onto your computer. Website Advertising

Some websites advertise their services, or services for an affiliate website, through popups. These are not a product of anything downloaded onto your computer, but come directly from the website you are viewing. To prevent these popups, use a popup blocker. Mozilla Firefox and Opera both have built-in popup blockers, as does Internet Explorer if you have Windows XP, properly updated to SP2. There are different options for blocking popup windows, and you can change the settings right there in your web browser. If you do not have a built-in popup blocker, you can download a third party software. As with any software, be careful what you download. Be sure that it is reputable and malware-free. Most of these third party blockers are free, and simple to use.

Tracking Cookies

Cookies are stored on your computer each time you visit a website. Generally, they are not harmful. They simply record your visit to the website, and make the pages load faster when you visit that website again in the future. Some websites, however, save tracking cookies. These are used, like malware and adware, to popup targeted ads based on what products, services, and webpages you have recently viewed. Clearing your cookies often, as well as avoiding questionable websites, will prevent these types of popups from recurring.

You also need to exercise caution when closing a popup window. Some particularly deceitful websites or malware will contain what looks like an “X” or “Close” button, that in reality gives the website permission to download unwanted software onto your computer–usually more malware or adware–or redirect you to another website. Look carefully at the window, and notice when your cursor changes from a hand to a pointer.
