This is a fairly common Windows access violation error and hopefully this article will help you resolve the problems you are having. We will try to show what the error looks like, why it appeared, and how to fix 0xc0000005 error.
A quick scan of the online technical forums and blogs reveal folks asking for help with this windows error. The error 0xc0000005 is generated by an illegal “memory access violation”. This can be caused by anything from faulty RAM, an incorrect/corrupt device driver, poorly written/updated software and more commonly under Windows XP Service pack 2, malware/adware installations. The error message looks something like below.
“An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated. Exception: access violation (0xC0000005), Address”
Usually you get this error message when performing a specific task and, if that happens, you need to check the corresponding 3rd party’s website/support department to see if they are aware of the problem. Also, be sure to use a Registry Cleaner, as this problem can appear is your registry is full of errors.
In many cases the 0xc0000005 error has been generated by faulty RAM memory. So if you have just upgraded your computer with some new memory and you started getting this error then removing them is a good option. You can see if the 0xc0000005 error goes away. If it does then send the memory back and get a refund!
In Windows XP Service Pack 2 Microsoft introduced Data execution prevention (DEP), a set of hardware and software technologies that perform additional checks on memory to help protect against malicious code exploits. In Windows XP SP2, DEP is enforced by both hardware and software. Some software/application behaviors are incompatible with the data execution prevention. Applications which perform dynamic code generation (such as Just-In-Time code generation) and that do not explicitly mark generated code with Execute permission might have compatibility issues with data execution prevention. Applications which are not built with SafeSEH must have their exception handlers located in executable memory regions. If you are having issues with 0xC0000005 errors in DEP and a particular piece of software is causing the offense, contact the vendor for a resolution.

At all.
Hi Masterblaster,
Try running the registry cleaner in a safe mode, without all of windows services up.
Hey,
I get the application failed to intialize proply (0xc0000005) upon start up, so I can’t get into my desk top screen to get on line. How do I fix this with out lossing anything?
Try to start Windows in safe mode, if you have XP then pressing F8 while the computer starts, before the windows logo appears, will get you to a menu where you can choose safe mode. Try that, it should work.
After entering safe mode, do a computer shut down and restart it again.
If it doesn’t solve the problem, try to use a registry cleaner in the safe mode. Click here for the best registry cleaners reviews.
Great article, thanks for the info, you have a great website.
A number of the buttons on your site appear broken. You might want to fix them
Thanks! I’ve been looking for this info all day today. My mac is not running like fast anymore and I need to figure out how to fix it soon. I have bookmarked your blog so others like me can find it too on digg.
When i start my computer up it shows the 0xc0000006 problem. If i try to start in safemode it wont let me. What do i Do? Thanks.
If your computer doesn’t start at all, not even in safe mode, I would recommend not trying to fix it but simply reinstall Windows on it.
Thanks, It worked, I had the 0xc0000005 error every time I started Windows. To fix it, I did as you said, I installed RegGenie, the first registry cleaner in the reviews list on this site, I did it in safe mode, I run a scan and fux with it, restarted, and windows went up normally. I stopped getting the 0xc0000005 error.

Hi all,
I have the 0xc0000005 error when I try to play games on my laptop. Other apps like Word and windows pic viewer are ok. I think it maybe memory error from using a external storage device. Also when I try to play games using .exe file it says there is a critical shortage of memory-I have 17GB left!
I used Registry Easy and it’s junk file and duplicate cleaner function and deleted lots of tmp and other files. Still get this error message……any suggestions welcome…..
In my case the situation is as follow:
When Windows XP is starting produce a blue screen with the following error:
“STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000005 (0×00000000 0×00000000)
The System has been shutdown”
There is no way to take the computer out of this cycle.
I have tried starting Windows in Safe mode but when the safe process begins the message is generated; I did try starting from my windows restarting CD, using Recovery Windows option and running from the console fixmbr, fixboot, bootcfg and chkdsk. Nothing happened. When I tried to start Windows, stop message came up again.
I do not know what more to do… could you please give me a hand..??
In advance thank you
