The rundll32.exe error is one of the most common DLL errors that Windows users experience. Here, we explain why it occurs, and what measures can be taken to prevent it.
This is a DLL—a dynamic link library—file that is put in place by your operating system. It is an essential process, meaning that it should not be terminated, and the file should not be removed. This particular process executes, or runs, your dynamic link libraries. It places the libraries in your computer’s allocated memory, in order to grant faster access to system tasks accessing the RAM.
When a program or file is not able to access the memory it needs in order to function, you will receive an error message that reads something like this: “Error in rundll32.exe. The specified module could not be found.” This is telling you that a process on your computer has been denied access to the memory module it was seeking to use.
This can be caused by a few different things. Various malware programs—spyware, viruses, malicious programs, and hardware—use the rundll32.exe file as a “back door”. They try to exploit this important system process in order to cause harm to your computer. These programs, however, do not have permission to access your DLLs, and if they try, this error message will be displayed.
Also, if your registry becomes cluttered with unnecessary or invalid keys and values, this can lead to errors with the rundll32.exe file. The registry keeps a record of changes made to your computer settings through Control Panel each time they are made. It also keeps a record of installations, uninstalls, incomplete downloads… pretty much every action that is taken that either adds, removes, or alters files on your hard drive. Over time, the registry can become filled with junk and wreak havoc on your system.
The first step that you should take is to obtain a reputable antivirus program. You should also download a registry cleaner tool. There are a multitude of different programs available, just use caution in what you download, as some rogue viruses disguise themselves as helpful tool. Practicing regular maintenance on your PC will also help avoid errors such as rundll32.exe. Defragment your hard drive often, regularly scan for viruses, keep your virus definitions up to date, and use safe browsing habits.
