Hi:

While yes it is helpful to have a few bootable DVDs/CDs, or even a USB Thumb Drive handy with some diagnostics.

BUT, sometimes, problems can be very elusive. Like "Soft Memory Errors" Errors which not only don't occur predictably, but have many causes.

Working a newly built system, after client took possession there were a number of problems that started when he tried to install Outlook Express 6.0 from a Tucows download. He brought the system back, and I performed a restore. He took it back and then after attaching an older hard drive to the IDE channel, he started having problems again. In fact a Windows.Old folder was created. The BSODs kept coming, and the system went into a infinte reboot loop. Even if he tried to enter safe mode.

I got the system back and reinstalled the OS. Everything seemed fine. I even ran MemTest86 and MHDD to completely test the RAM and HD. Everything tested good. I left the system running, when not to long after it rebooted after explorer.exe crashed. Event Reporting indicated crashes with dates ahead of actual. ??

So far it appears that the problem is when the system is operating at normal temperature, it starts to fail. It seems to be linked to one of the 2GB 800MHz RAM Modules.

In the end get to the know the characteristics of common failures, and think logically. Most of all BE PATIENT!
